Andaman and Nicobar islands, is one of the seven union territories of India. Located at the juncture of Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, There are around 572 scattered islands out of which only around 37 are inhabited . The words ‘Andaman’ and ‘Nicobar’ have been derived from the Malay language. ‘Andaman’ is derived from the Malay word for the Hindu deity, Lord Hanuman and ‘Nicobar’ roughly translates to ‘the land of naked people’. The most widely spoken language in these islands is Bengali.


Andaman is home to a tribe called the Sentinelese, who have no contact with the outside world. The only active volcano in India is also located here. The state animal of Andaman and Nicobar islands is the Dugong. It is a sea mammal. The largest sea turtles in the world, Dermocheleys Coriacea, can also be found here. Katchal Islands enjoyed the distinction of being the first place to receive the sun rays this millennium sunrise.

Another awe inspiring site for tourists are the mud volcanoes- Baratang.
